The problem
How might we help employees transition careers and succeed as Product Designer?
We formalized a path for candidates transition careers into product design, while protecting the business investment in developing that talent.
Specific goals
This program facilitated apprentices in making impactful contributions to the organization through high-impact project work, presentations, and networking. We selected apprentices who are self-motivated, curious, eager to learn, and passionate about design.
Key metrics
- Manager performance reviews
- Progress against design competencies (ie. visual design and research)
- Time in role
My role
I was the Product Design program lead. I partnered closely product leadership and the enterprise talent team to construct the training, interview process, and performance check-ins.
Arriving at the proposed solution
We needed to make sure that education, support systems, and pay structures were defined. We partnered with Design Lab with their network of mentors and history developing UX curriculum. This program is recognized by the TN Department of Labor as an official, registered apprenticeship.
- Develop and calibrate with Product leadership on the core competencies
- Identify an education partner and agree on a curriculum
- Create a hiring plan with pay bands, relocation, and performance plans
- 12-month training from nationally recognized Design Lab UX Certification
- Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices gained competencies necessary to start a career as an Associate Product Designer at Asurion.
