moving to the UK

I’ve been confronted with challenges that have been overwhelming the past few weeks esp in regards to my possible move to the UK. I worry about the strength of the local job market in UK, the higher cost of living,  access to affordable housing, new weather patterns, new neighborhood, new colleagues, new banks, new doctors, new fashion, new hairstylist, new bills to pay, new way of working, the new job,  new ways to get lost on new roads, new ways of tipping, new places, new public holidays, new friends, new birthdays. All this have been so aggravating and stressful not to mention expensive. I’ll try to keep this post simple and not bore you with things that have been keeping me constantly occupied. My shout out to a few friends esp. this “sexy boy” that have been bearing lots of my whim ping and whining and rubbish-bitchy attitude lately.

  • Money: It may seem obvious to you, but I’ll need some savings or petty cash before I get my first pay cheque which unfortunately I don’t!  I’ll probably be paying for most things up front without any credit history and this includes the bond/deposit/rental etc for the new house, council tax and all other cost associated with moving and guess what – I certainly don’t have that kinda savings to start off!
    • Accomodation: It is quite expensive to rent good quality housing in the UK, but I heard rental prices do vary significantly between locations.  Friends from the UK have told me that it is very expensive to rent housing in central London.  However, to buy a home is becoming easier and easier for foreigners and there are lenders prepared to lend up to 95% of the mortgage. My colleagues also made sure I know that in the UK, its important to get a good mortgage broker who will compare what’s available on the entire market. It is also highly advisable to rent in area first before buying to get to know your neighborhood. I have used several sites to scout for places. To check for accommodation, the locals use  www.rightmove.co.uk, www.propertyfinder.co.uk and for more upmarket homes www.primelocation.com. To check out a certain neighbourhood you can use www.upmystreet.com but if you prefer to use a relocation agent you can try www.venna.co.uk.

    • Travel: Traveling into Europe is relatively cheap with no frill airlinea like Easy jet http://www.easyjet.co.uk , Ryanair http://www.ryanair.co.uk, BMI http://www.flybmi.co.uk Rail travel is available between all cities, towns and most villages. In London there is also the underground rail (tube) which most commuters use to avoid the traffic congestion. Roads are kept to a good standard, and motorways exist. Public transport is widely available and service varies from town to village. In London, most people travel on public transport. It’s gonna be a good 1 hour journey from Aylesbury – London by train and its gonna cost me approx. 20 GBP to travel back and fro. There are plans to purchase a second hand Honda or BMW when time permits. Prices of cars varies from GBP5000 – GBP20,000. Car insurance will cost nearly GBP250 per year and fuel in the UK fluctuates from time to time. For more information on London transport visit http://www.tfl.gov.uk, for National Rail visit http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ for street maps visit http://www.streetmaps.co.uk and UK Guides http://www.i-uk.com.

    • Taxes: Income tax is normally collected at source by the employer on behalf of the Inland Revenue – the tax collecting department and it varies for 10% to 40% depending on income.  I’ve heard that the regulations on whether or not you pay taxes if you are not permanently staying in the UK are very complicated. In the UK, you can obtain relief from double taxation if your overseas income is subject to tax both in the UK and in another country. The question is: to whom must you pay which income taxes? Min Fook said I may need to hire a tax consultant to at least get you started. The Inland Revenue website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk or http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk will provide more useful information.

    • Health: The National Health Service funded by the government provides free medical care to UK residents, they may only pay for prescriptions, eye test, and dental treatment. More information can be found on http://www.nhs.uk

    • Shopping: Shopping hours are usually from 9am – 5.30 pm Monday to Saturday. Sunday trading is from 10am – 4pm.  The bigger supermarkets are generally open 24 hours.

    • Credit History: I suppose my current credit cards from home will provide me with a stop-gap until I  receive a new credit card. It is imperative to build a good credit rating; your credit rating is a measure of your credit-worthiness or in other words, your record of borrowing and repayment. Without a credit rating, few institutions will lend you money! It takes a couple of years to build up credit history. Foreigners new to the U.K. are deemed to have no credit rating, no matter how good their rating at home. Some expats overcome this by providing letters of introduction or account statements from their banks back home, this I must not forget to do! I also heard that it maybe difficult to even get a contract mobile phone or buy a car on hire purchase which is very different from the way we do things in Malaysia. Banks encourage us to take car loans by the thousands for millions of years. That basically means, I’ll have to save up for a car to be able to pay it by hard cash!

    • Arrival: Let’s not even mention that I’m absolutely gonna miss my friends, my family and my current care-free lifestyle. Everything will be different and I’ll definitely be feeling homesick and stressed for the first few months. Am I ready for this change?
